Bibimbap (비빔밥) is one of Korea’s most famous dishes. It’s a delicious and colorful rice bowl topped with assorted vegetables, a fried egg, sliced beef (or tofu), and spicy gochujang sauce. The best part? You mix everything together before eating, creating an explosion of flavors in every bite!
Ingredients (Serves 2-3)
For the Base:
2 cups cooked white rice (short-grain or medium-grain)
For the Toppings:
100g beef (sirloin or ribeye), thinly sliced (or tofu for a vegetarian option)
1 small carrot, julienned
1 zucchini, julienned
½ cup bean sprouts
½ cup spinach
5-6 shiitake mushrooms, sliced
1 fried egg per bowl
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tsp sesame oil
1 tbsp soy sauce
½ tsp salt
For the Gochujang Sauce:
2 tbsp gochujang (Korean red pepper paste)
1 tbsp sesame oil
1 tbsp water
1 tbsp honey (or sugar)
1 tsp vinegar
½ tsp garlic, minced
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Rice
Cook the rice according to package instructions. Keep it warm.
Step 2: Cook the Vegetables
Spinach & Bean Sprouts: Blanch each in boiling water for 30 seconds, then rinse with cold water. Squeeze out excess water and mix with a pinch of salt and sesame oil.
Carrots & Zucchini: Sauté separately in a pan with a little sesame oil and a pinch of salt for 1-2 minutes.
Mushrooms: Sauté in sesame oil with minced garlic and soy sauce for 2 minutes.
Step 3: Cook the Beef (or Tofu)
Heat a pan, add a little oil, and cook the beef with soy sauce, garlic, and sesame oil until browned. If using tofu, pan-fry until golden.
Step 4: Make the Gochujang Sauce
Mix all sauce ingredients in a small bowl until smooth.
Step 5: Assemble the Bibimbap
Place warm rice in a bowl.
Arrange the cooked vegetables, beef (or tofu), and fried egg on top.
Drizzle the gochujang sauce over everything.
Mix well before eating and enjoy!
Tips for the Best Bibimbap
For extra crunch: Add some toasted sesame seeds or roasted seaweed strips.
For a smoky flavor: Use a hot stone bowl (dolsot) to create crispy rice at the bottom.
For a healthier option: Swap white rice for brown rice or quinoa.
