Bagel pastries are a delightful twist on classic bagels, combining the rich, chewy texture of a bagel with a buttery, flaky pastry feel. This easy recipe will guide you through making soft and golden bagel pastries right at home.
Ingredients
For the Dough:
3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
1 ½ tbsp sugar
1 ¼ cups warm water (110°F or 45°C)
1 tsp salt
2 tbsp butter (melted)
For Boiling:
8 cups water
2 tbsp honey or brown sugar
For Topping:
1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
Sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or everything bagel seasoning
Instructions
Step 1: Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, mix warm water and sugar. Add the yeast and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
Step 2: Make the Dough
In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
Add the activated yeast mixture and melted butter. Mix well until a dough forms.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Step 3: Shape the Bagels
Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
Roll each piece into a ball and poke a hole in the center, stretching it into a ring shape.
Step 4: Boil the Bagels
Bring 8 cups of water and honey to a gentle boil in a large pot.
Boil each bagel for 30–45 seconds on each side, then place them on a lined baking sheet.
Step 5: Bake the Bagels
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Brush each bagel with egg wash and sprinkle with your favorite toppings.
Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden brown and crispy on the outside.
